Would you like to become a volunteer mentor, working with refugees who are living with HIV to make a real difference to their lives?

The Refugee Mentoring Project is a service offering targeted one-to-one support to HIV positive refugees, asylum seekers and refused asylum seekers living in London who need practical help and emotional support.

The service is completely confidential, and is provided to refugees aged 18+ in their own homes, or another safe community space, by trained and CRB checked volunteers. The project aims to support and enable people to lead as independent a life as possible.

Support could include

  • Weekly visits and phone support
  • Emotional support and someone to talk to in confidence
  • Accompanying to appointments
  • Advocacy (letter writing, phone calls, in person)
  • Accessing legal advice & representation
  • Accessing services, healthcare & other sources of support
  • Accessing information about HIV, treatment, managing health
  • Accessing information about benefits, immigration and housing
  • Accessing hardship funds
  • Finding out about education

We are currently urgently looking for volunteer mentors.

  • Are you reliable and a good communicator?
  • Are you flexible and open-minded?
  • Can you handle challenging situations and be sensitive to people's feelings and needs?
  • Do you have experience of, or are you interested in, the issues faced by refugees living with HIV?
  • Can you spare 3-4 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months?

You will receive full training and join a group of other volunteers for monthly support meetings. If you would like to know more, please contact Pippa Brown, Refugee & Asylum Project Co-ordinator on 020 7812 1512 or email pippa.brown@tht.org.uk.

If you would like to apply to become a part of this pioneering project, please contact the Volunteer Office on 020 7812 1721 or email volunteeroffice@tht.org.uk
